HMONG NC
A few Hmong
families came directly from
Thailand to North Carolina in the
late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The
rest came from other states to
search for economic opportunities
or better place to raise a family.
The climate of North Carolina is
similar to that of Laos. As a
result, many Hmong families want
to live here. The employment
opportunities were good for many
Hmong who do not speak much
English and possess little
technical skills. The Unifour’s
furniture and other industries
offer the Hmong families the
opportunity to earn a decent
living. Many of them were able to
own their own homes. Those who
live in the countryside are also
able to raise some domestic
animals just like in their
homeland of Laos. The Hmong
community in North Carolina is a
close knit community where almost
everyone knows each other. The
majority of Hmong in North
Carolina live in the area known as
the Unifour which covers Burke,
Caldwell, Catawba and Alexander
County.
